The Registrar of Vital Statistics is located within the Office of the Municipal Clerk. The Registrar is responsible for recording marriages, domestic partnerships, civil unions, births and deaths.
Marriage and Civil Union Information
Our Mayor and our Judge are not performing ceremonies at this time. You will apply prior to your ceremony in the municipality where you reside. Your ceremony can take place anywhere in the State of New Jersey. If both parties are not residents of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the Registrar of the municipality where the ceremony is to be performed and is only good for use in that municipality.
Who should apply in Jackson Township:
- Applicants who reside in Jackson Township; or out of state couples who are getting married in Jackson Township, NJ.
Where to apply:
- Couples who live in New Jersey apply for the marriage license in the New Jersey Municipality where either party resides. The marriage license is only valid throughout the state of New Jersey.
- If neither applicant is a New Jersey resident, submit the application in the municipality where the marriage ceremony will be performed in New Jersey. In this case, the license is only valid in the issuing municipality and the marriage must take place in this township only!
When to apply:
- Recommendation is to complete the application at least two (2) weeks before the ceremony. There is a mandated 72 hour waiting period from the time of application until you can use your license. Weekends are counted in the waiting period.
- Once the marriage license is physically issued, it is valid for thirty (30) days.
Jackson Township Registrar's Office schedules marriage license appointments on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, by appointment only. Appointment times are available at 10:00 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Application Requirements:
- The $28.00 application fee may be paid by credit card, debit card, or check made payable to Jackson Township.
- Proof of identity by presenting a driver’s license, passport or state/federal/county ID
- Proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill or bank statement (within 90 days), tax return or lease
- A witness, 18 years of age or older and a translator (if needed)
- Must have a date of ceremony and an officiant before you apply
- Blood tests are no longer required to obtain a marriage license in New Jersey
* The witness cannot be the Officiant.

Vital Records
A certified copy of a vital record is often referred to as “a copy with a raised seal”
All documents must be English translated if in a foreign language.
- Non-Genealogical Records are births occurring in the last eighty (80) years or if the individual is still living, marriages occurring within the last 50 years, deaths occurring within the last forty (40) years and all civil union and domestic partnership records.
- Certified Copies have the raised seal of the office issuing the record and are always issued on State of New Jersey safety paper. Certified copies may be used to establish identity and are legal documents.
Applications for a certified copy of a non-genealogical record require the applicant to provide a completed application, valid ID, payment of the fee and if requesting a certified copy, proof that establishes you are:
- the subject of the record
- subject’s parent, legal guardian or legal representative
- the subject's spouse/civil union partner, domestic partner
- subject’s child, grandchild or sibling, if of legal age
- a state or federal agency for official purposes; or
- requesting pursuant to a court order
- If you do not have an ID the requestor must show proof by two alternate forms of ID which could be vehicle registration card, passport, county ID card, school ID card, green card or utility bill.
- Payment of fee: $10.00 per certified copy. (Exact change preferred) or check made payable to Jackson Township
