U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Reviews Cleanup at Jackson Twp. Landfill Superfund Site
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting its fourth Five-Year Review of the Jackson Township Landfill Superfund Site located in Jackson Township, Ocean County, New Jersey. This review seeks to confirm the “No Further Action with Maintenance and Monitoring” remedy selected in the 1994 Record of Decision (ROD) which was based upon EPA’s and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) determination that conditions at the Site posed no current or potential threat to human health and the environment. In addition, the ROD recognized the closure of the landfill in accordance with New Jersey regulations. Actions necessary to comply with NJDEP Solid Waste Landfill Closure requirements included the installation of a soil cap and detention basins, and post-closure monitoring of groundwater and air in order to ensure that the effectiveness of the remedy continues to be protective of public health and the environment and is functioning as designed. The upcoming Five-Year Review report is scheduled to be completed by 5/1/15.
